Naturalization is the process in which a Lawful Permanent Resident becomes a citizen of the United States. There are various requirements a green card holder must meet in order to be eligible for naturalization, including:
- at least five (5) years of Lawful Permanent Residence (exceptions available to Lawful Permanent Residents who adjusted status through a U.S. Citizen spouse or Lawful Permanent Residents serving in the U.S. Military);
- physical presence in the United States for the majority of every year in which Lawful Permanent Resident held;
- good moral character (arrests and/or convictions may disqualify certain applicants);
- the ability to speak, read, and write the English language;
- passage of the U.S. History and Civics Examination administered by USCIS at interview.
